It scares me that species characters you make your character friends with could be traded at a moment's notice. I've been sat here wondering whether it's even worth making friends between characters, when there's no guarantee that the other character won't soon belong to someone else, with a different personality, and a different story which can't be mixed with yours...

I think, hey, if I can't feel secure in writing stories involving other people's species characters interacting with mine, then maybe I should try to get another (few) characters for myself and then I know I won't trade them without a good reason? But it would take so much work/money, and essentially I'm setting up tasks for myself that I don't even need to complete, things that I do because I feel obligated to do in order to take part, but I'm not taking part, am I? These are all things I could do with characters I make myself, and have full control over, which I am already doing!!! And I care about those characters much more than my species characters!

So do I stick my leg out into the community, hoping it doesn't get run over by a bus? Do I work my ass off to get multiple characters, just in order to create a stack of additional chores for myself? Or do I just forget about the whole species thing altogether, and try to ignore it? I don't know... This isn't as fun as I initially thought it would be...

Just some honest thoughts.

Well, I can tell you right off the bat that you should always make friends with people before you make friends with characters. Especially since you know a lot of people in the cs community do this.
You create bonds and you will in fact find people who genuinely care about their characters and do in fact keep them. They are not a rare sight.

and trading away characters of high value for other goods is in general common, not just with cs. In cs communities it may seem more common because you're able to see it happening with journals vocalizing it, but that's not always true, and you can see it on toyhou.se especially that people will trade off non cs characters just as easily.
again, it's just an illusion that makes it seem like it only happens with cs, and quick access to a large market quickens the rate of trades in general.

it all depends on the person
and sadly
many people on da only care about finesse/value trading/ or just cool things which they realize they don't really need or can't actually draw or connect with
but that never means that these are the only people out there
and like mentioned bellow, some groups work to discourage this way of buying at little value or attempt to slow down trades  because it's just a person's personal problem of attitude towards designs and their value both to them and in the market.

On a side thought
making forever friends with a character is nice! But don't forget, passing friends can also be a thing. Just as real life friends. if someone lacks commitment then you just search for someone who enjoys commitment like you. And you will find them.

Ps-
rping with someone definitly helps/ having And making friends through rp helps develope both your characters
